What is Mental Health? What you need to know.

Digital Pianting Called Identity

Welcome to Mindful Advocate: Nurturing Mental Health Awareness

(I'd like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Taryn Ozorio, the Digital Manager at Mind.org.uk, for her thought-provoking article that served as the inspiration for today's conversation.)

Today, we're delving into a topic that's deeply personal to me: mental health. It's not just a trendy phrase; like I said in my video it's about comprehending our emotions, understanding ourselves, and navigating life's complexities with grace. Mental health deserves the same attention and care as physical health.

The World Health Organization defines mental health as, "a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community." This definition underscores the holistic nature of mental health—it's about thriving, not just surviving.

Mental Health refers to a person's overall emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It encompasses how individuals think, feel, and behave in various situations. Good mental health means being able to cope with the stresses of life, maintain positive relationships, and make meaningful contributions to society. It's about feeling satisfied with life and having the resilience to bounce back from challenges. Mental health exists on a spectrum, with varying degrees of well-being from thriving to struggling.

Mental Illness, on the other hand, refers to specific diagnosable conditions that affect a person's thinking, mood, behavior, or perception. These conditions can disrupt a person's ability to function normally in their daily lives. Mental illnesses can range from relatively mild and temporary disorders, such as situational depression or anxiety, to more severe and chronic conditions, such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. Mental illnesses are characterized by symptoms that cause significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.

My Thoughts!

Identity is like a mask we wear, showing the world who we want to be. But sometimes, behind that mask, things aren't as they seem. My digital painting called "Identity" captures this idea.Imagine someone who looks happy and successful on the outside. They might have a good job and seem confident. But inside, they could be struggling with sadness, anxiety, or other challenges.

This difference between how we look and how we feel can affect our mental health. People might feel alone or ashamed because they don't want others to know they're struggling. My painting "Identity" shows that what you see on the surface isn't always the whole story. It reminds us to be kind and understanding because everyone has their own battles, even if they don't show it.

Drawing from personal experience, I've witnessed the transformative power of medication in managing mental health challenges. While medication is valuable, it's just one piece of the puzzle. Seeking professional help, practicing self-care, and fostering a supportive environment are equally essential aspects of mental health care.

Prioritizing mental health isn't just about individual well-being; it's about building a more compassionate and inclusive society. As we navigate the complexities of mental health, self-care emerges as a cornerstone of well-being. Engaging in activities like exercise, healthy eating, and relaxation techniques can nurture our mental resilience and promote emotional balance we will look more into this in later posts.
